A practical course for aspiring skippers who have some yachting experience and basic navigation and sailing ability.
You should be able to sail around a triangular course and control boat speed. If gibing is still surprise you need more practice. Navigation can be learnt by attending the RYA Day Skipper shore based course at BM Sailing or one of the 1000 centres throughout the UK and abroad.
Each trainee will be encouraged to skipper the yacht on a short passage with the instructor on hand to give advice and to ensure that your destination is reached safely. The essential element is that you experience being in charge, taking the credit when all goes well but being responsible when it doesn't, and learning from it. The end of each day is usually spent around the chart discussing the passages and gaining from each other's experience.
When you achieve the standard required, BM Sailing will present you with your RYA DAY SKIPPER PRACTICAL CERTIFICATE. This is widely accepted by charter/flotilla companies as proof of your ability, don't forget to send us a postcard for our collection of happy, sun burnt skippers.
